1. Miami, United States
“La Maison au Bord de l’Eau” or the house beside the water, was a design conceived by Charlotte Perriand in 1934, as a competition entrant for the French architecture magazine L’Architecture d’Aujourd’hui. In 2013, the Louis Vuitton fashion house constructed it for the Miami Design Fair.
This small house contains two bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a central communal space covered by a fabric canopy. With its sleek wooden design, soft light color tones, and large glass doors, this was a design far ahead of its time.
2. Hawaii, United States
This spectacular home is set in a truly breathtaking environment. The 870 square-foot building contains one bedroom, two bathrooms, a kitchen, and a living area, as well as a private deck. You can appreciate the marvelous views of the ocean whilst lounging in the private, ocean-side pool.

The bedroom allows spectacular views of the ocean and beachfront, with mesmerizing sunsets and a cool ocean breeze. This is glamping, Tarzan style.
6. Newport Beach, United States
A quaint beach-side cottage that maintains much of its original quality and is in keeping with the tone and themes of the Newport Beach area. Despite its small size, it comes well-equipped, with a bedroom, lounge, kitchen, and bathroom, as well as a front porch with decking.
The interior design leans heavily on the nautical theme, with white walls complemented by touches of various blues throughout. The perfect place to relax after a day’s surf.
7. Mousehole, England
This stone cottage in the charming Cornish village of Mousehole is right on the harbor, with stunning views, the fresh sea breeze, and hypnotic sunsets. The house is set over three floors, containing a master suite, guest bedroom, large living room, kitchen, and bathroom.
There is an abundance of cultural and historically significant places to visit locally such as St Michael’s Mount, a 12th-century island castle.
8. Long Beach, United States
This shipping container home in Long Beach, California, is an incredible example of maximizing the use of space available. With 160 square feet, the interior has an open plan kitchen and lounge area, with a pull-out sofa bed for when it’s time to settle down for the night.
The roof is also 160 feet square and provides a second floor to the property and an outdoor lounge area. The house is designed to be sustainable and energy-efficient, whilst the compact design makes it easily transported.
9. Whangapoua, New Zealand
The Hut on Sleds house can incredibly, despite being only 40 meters squared, host a family of five. The open plan design with a double-height ceiling, combined with the beach facing two-story glass doors, creates a spacious yet practical living area.
Eco-friendly with the addition of external water tanks, the property can be pulled back from the beachfront, in the case of coastal erosion.
10. Isle of Eigg, Scotland
An eco-friendly, timber frame house, which is located on the picturesque Isle of Eigg in Scotland. The home adheres to the island’s community ethos of championing green living and low carbon emissions, through being well insulated and using the island’s renewable energy sources.
The home is 50 meters square, with an open-plan living area to create space and large windows to take advantage of the incredible views of the water.
11. California, United States
An original 1950s California cottage in Hollywood Beach, between Malibu and Santa Barbara. This delightful historical property contains three bedrooms, a garage, and shared family space in its 1,100 square feet.
The open plan design of the kitchen and living area creates a practical communal space. The private beach is only a two-minute walk away, with white sands and views of the Channel Islands. A taste of Hollywood history.
12. Kent, England
This stunning wooden home was built incorporating an old railway carriage, which houses the kitchen and lounge area. The use of solar and wind power, allows the house to be carbon negative, though there is a wood-burning stove for those bitter winter nights.

You will be lulled to sleep by the sounds of nature, as the waves break on the shore, only steps away from the house. Built with old Bali teak and resting under the shade of a large ficus tree, which is part of the building’s structure and support.
The interior is decked out with a mixture of traditional furniture and decor, whilst the outside kitchen allows you to eat alfresco. Meander down to the beach and catch sight of the dolphins, turtles, and reef fish that populate the area.
15. Washington, United States
This adorable 19-foot house is set on a peaceful hilltop amongst fruit and fir trees. It has access to a private beach via the trail below, and gorgeous views of the surrounding bay.
